Here at Datrim Web Design, we get calls frequently from people who want to update their websites. After a brief question and answer session, it becomes clear that their main reason for doing so is to increase traffic to their site.

Probing a little deeper reveals that their current site has only 3 or 4 pages of content and they are hoping that making the site more beautiful will attract more visitors. Unfortunately, the search engines don’t care whether your website is the most stunning creation ever or as ugly as the day is long. Getting more visitors to the site is done by getting on page one of the Google search results, and that has nothing to do with aesthetics.

Our standard answer is usually, get more content on your site. Spend your money on a good copywriter who has experience writing for the web. If you cannot afford a copywriter, perhaps you can write it yourself – after all, you are an expert in your field. Alternatively, add a blog to the site. Then write posts offering helpful hints or information about your business. However you can do it, fill your site with good, meaningful content that pertains to the type of business you are in.

Make the search engines happy first and then worry about your visitors, because the bitter truth is that unless the search engines see your site as a valuable resource, you will not have any visitors to worry about.

Taking this approach will be far more effective, and once you are getting a decent amount of traffic, then consider sprucing up the site. Until that day arrives, don’t waste your money on cosmetic surgery.
