Does every business need a Website?

by Chris Pritchard General

Many small-business owners think they need a Web site. They're not sure what they will do with it, but everyone is telling them they should have one and in most cases, they're right. A Web site can be an important marketing tool for almost every small business, but there may be exceptions.

Many small-business owners think they need a Web site. They're not sure what they will do with it, but everyone is telling them they should have one and in most cases, they're right. A Web site can be an important marketing tool for almost every small business, but there may be exceptions.

Lets say you are a busy landscape gardener. You're booked solid for the next two months and are earning enough to maintain a decent lifestyle. Your business has grown and continues to grow by word-of-mouth and your clients don't need to find your office as you travel to them. You have no need to market your business on the web, so you probably don't need a website.

Perhaps you run a small shop and all your customers pass your door. You're certain that potential customers won't use the Internet to find your product or service, and you are probably right, so again you probably don't need a website.

The above examples show that not every small business owner will benefit form having a website. However, there is another side to this issue. In today's world any business that does not have a website could be compared to not having business cards twenty years ago.

A large segment of the community do not use the phone book any more, but search online for what they want. What's more, this segment is growing rapidly and should be of concern to you if your business relies on the phone book as a source of new customers.

A website can be both effective and affordable without costing a fortune. Even a one-page site with a short descriptiuon of your your business and contact details will be sufficient to start. In fact, the old adage "Keep it simple stupid" (KISS) is extremely appropriate when designing a website - but that's another topic...

Unless you have more customers than you can handle, a website will be a good investment. A well-designed site can grow as your business grows - perhaps adding more services or products. So for most businesses, perhaps the title of this post should be "Can my Business Afford to NOT have a Website?"
